When the Albury company electronic manufacturing ADI decided to sell its manufacturing business, the then-production manager, Mr David Cooper and wife Wendy, saw an opportunity and established Milspec Manufacturing.

Now, almost 5 years after purchasing ADI's manufacturing capacity the company has a substantial team of skilled employees and is looking towards the future.

The Milspec Team as of 2004

Today, 2008, the team has more than trebled and we are operating from two locations.

"ADI had sold the intellectual rights to their products to the Swiss Company Polytronic and we saw an opportunity to take on the manufacturing capabilities," Mr Cooper said.

"It looked like ADI was going to see out existing contracts and then close the doors so everyone would have lost their jobs. I thought it was the wrong decision and we all deserved better than that.

"The company was very good to us and the terms they sold it to us were second to none as it was keen to see that we got the business up and running.

"So everyone walked out of here on a Friday with a redundancy package and then back in on Monday with a job for a new company."

The change of ownership also brought about a change in diversity of products the factory produces.

Mr Cooper said the company electronic manufacturing was established by Albury businessman Mr Lindsay Knight about 35 years ago and had been owned by several different owners instigating a number of name changes.

However its core business had been producing electronic and computer controlled target systems used by military for training.

Live-fire, remote controlled large target

Mr L.C.Knight, the founder of the company electronic manufacturing called Australasain Training Aids (ATA) , developed the facilities into a world-class operation selling products across the globe.

Today the company is still manufacturing target systems, which are sold through its largest customer, Polytronic, Switzerland, but is looking outside the box in order to diversify.

"As ADI our sole manufacturing base was target Systems which kept us so busy we didn't have the capability to take on other oportunities and at times had to knock back work," Mr Cooper said.

"The problem is that when there are military budget cuts one of the first things to be scrapped are plans for multi-million-dollar target ranges so we need to ensure we had ongoing work for our skilled staff."

The company electronic manufacturing has been involved with the upgrading and redevelopment of 14 training ranges for the Australian military and has recently completed several overseas projects.

Mr Cooper said the focus of business had changed to take in a broader range of work which in turn has seen its products stay in Australia rather than going overseas.

"Traditionally, about 85 % of our production has gone overseas but in the past 18 Months that has changed to about 85% of our production staying in Australia," he said.

Mr Cooper said he had been keen to see the company electronic manufacturing expand its product base for some time but it was not until he bought the company that such a move had become a viable option.

Now with a workforce of 36 staff who have a wide skill-base the potential was there to perform all levels of manufacturing from prototype development to management and delivery.

We can make almost anything! With the experience and talent of its workforce Milspec Manufacturing in Albury is ready to take on just about any manufacturing challenge.

That's the claim owner David Cooper is proud to back, confident his company has the capability to produce a vast array of mechanical or electrical components or equipment.

He said the company electronic manufacturing was accredited to manufacture to military and aerospace standards which meant it could produce high quality products at commercial rates.

The company has an accreditation for ISO 9002

"We can build anything for anyone," Mr Cooper said.

"You won't find another electronic manufacturing services in Albury-Wodonga with the same range of capacity as we have and you would be hard pressed to find one in Sydney or Melbourne.

"With our customs cable assembly team we can make wiring looms and harnesses.
We love electromechanical assembly work. We can manufacture circuit boards and test them.
Our environmental test chamber can test and soak equipment to temperature of between minus 40 and 180 Degrees Centigrade.

"And we have a fully shielded radio test area to ensure none of the testing interferes with anyone else's equipment.

"We have full computer numerical controlled machining facilities and a sheet metal shop.

"And our powder coating process is capable of producing a finish to full military specifications so it is second to none in this area. "We chemically pre-treat components before powder coating so there's a much stronger bond.

"We can make every product up to military and aerospace standards.

"But we have a bit of a different business philosophy in that we are not targeting local businesses; we have made a conscious decision that we don't want to create competition in town."

Mr Cooper said the company electronic manufacturing was involved with an Integrated Capability Team which was part of a multi-national force charged with producing the F35 aircraft.

He said the joint strike fighter aircraft would be built with input of several nations.
Initially 60 aircraft's are planned and up to 10,000 aircrafts will be built.

At present the company electronic manufacturing is carrying out refurbishments on missile launch systems for BAE Systems. It is also working with a Sydney company on the prototype development of scientific instruments.
"We have completely revamped it, it was a single function but it is now a multi-function unit which will have an international market," he said.

"Because of the product design expertise our staff have, we are able to take on all stages of a project from initial prototype development through to manufacture and packaging and shipping.

"The people we have working for us have many years of experience in design and manufacture so they intuitively know how to manufacture just about anything."

Milspec company electronic manufacturing are a recognised supplier to a number of prestigious national and overseas customers.
